Local Government and Physical Activity
Local Government can play a crucial role in increasing physical activity by creating environments and opportunities for activity and active living as well as delivering initiatives to meet local community needs.
Local government can support physical activity by:
- Providing facilities for the community to be physically active;
- Developing physical activity plans;
- Creating footpaths and trails that connect shops, schools, recreation facilities and public open space to encourage walking and cycling as active transport;
- Developing and retrofitting public open space;
- Producing signage, maps and other promotional materials for local walk trails and events;
- Promoting programs for seniors, youth and women and other group; and
- Establishing a local pedometer loans system and walking program.
The Taskforce works closely with local governments to support them in improving physical activity opportunities at a local level. These include;
