A new research brief from Active Living Research summarises research on community access to school sport and recreation facilities outside of school hours, as well as studies that examine the shared use of school facilities and programs with other community groups or agencies. It also describes challenges commonly associated with the shared use of recreational facilities, and opportunities for policy-makers at the state and local level.

On 30 August 2011 amendments to Western Australian bicycle regulations were announced. A key amendment is that adults are now permitted to ride a compliant* power assisted pedal cycle (PAPC) on shared paths with the power engaged.

The Department of Transport produces and distributes a range of comprehensive cycling brochures, which can be downloaded from the cycling section of their website.
In this submission the Taskforce outlines it's support for the intent to provide a strategic planning profile and direction for the Pilbara region and provides a number of comments for consideration by the Pilbara Regional Planning Committee and the Western Australian Planning Commission.
The Taskforce's Built Environment Advisory Committee has reviewed the RDA Perth Draft Regional Plan and provided a number of comments for consideration by the Perth Committee of Regional Development Australia.
Arthur spoke on increasing active transport amongst secondary school students through authentic youth engagement. He shared his personal stories of success, the theoretical evidence base for student leadership and gave some tips on some of the challenges with sustaining effective student engagement.

The National Heart Foundation has developed a checklist, as a national consumer advocacy tool, that asks community residents to be the ‘eyes and feet’ of their Local Government council to provide feedback on the ‘walkability’ of their local neighbourhoods.
The World Health Organization developed the "Global Recommendations on Physical Activity for Health" with the overall aim of providing national and regional level policy makers with guidance on the dose-response relationship between the frequency, duration, intensity, type and total amount of physical activity needed for the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

The Heart Foundation and the Western Australian Council of State School Organisations (WACSSO) have developed a resource - a guide advocating for walking, cycling and other health issues - to assist parent groups to influence their school community to make positive changes to their environment, making it easier for children to lead healthy, more active lives.
The built environment is directly associated with physical activity, particularly walking. To encourage and facilitate walking for transport and walking for recreation, the Heart Foundation makes recommendations for adult Australians, the health sector, governments and planners that include changes to the built environment and multi-level strategies, such as public education.

The Physical Activity Taskforce Implementation Plan 2009 document was prepared by working with stakeholders across a range of government and non government agencies.
The Local Activity Grants program offered matched grants for local governments and community groups to encourage new and innovative approaches to increasing physical activity. The grants recognised a sustainable increase in physical activity requires a cross-government, multi agency approach.
Get up and Grow is a set of guidelines to healthy eating and physical activity for young children, an initiative that is an important element of the Australian Government’s Plan for Early Childhood and Plan for Tackling Obesity.

Given that physical inactivity is one of the most important and modifiable risk factors contributing to ill health, particularly for people as they age, the Physical Activity Taskforce conducted a secondary analysis of the 2006 adult physical activity survey data, restricted to adults aged over 45 years - the 'baby boomers'.
The Physical Activity Adult Survey was undertaken by the Physical Activity Taskforce to provide a measure of physical activity levels among West Australian adults. Surveys have been conducted in 1999, 2002, 2006 and 2009.
The Australian Early Development Index (AEDI) provides a measure of young children's development from a population perspective. The AEDI is used to provide a snapshot of the current state of children's development within communities all over Australia.
