State Planning Strategy

The State Planning Strategy for Western Australia is a strategy which will ensure that the population can grow and still meet community aspirations for a high quality of life and a clean environment. The Strategy has been prepared by the Western Australian Planning Commission, primarily to assist government in long term land use planning. It will also assist all State and local government agencies, as well as the private sector, to achieve a coordinated response to the challenges of the future.

The strategy will provide a strategic guide for land use planning through to the year 2029, Western Australian's bicentenary. It is aimed at developing a land use planning system to help the State achieve a number of key goals. These include generating wealth, conserving and enhancing the environment, and building vibrant and safe communities.

The State Planning Strategy for Western Australia:

  • sets out a common vision for development in the State and for the regions within it;
  • provides a guide to the State Government on its land use planning response and on the programs and actions required to achieve the vision set out in this Strategy
  • identifies the likely changes and prepares for them; and,
  • establishes the mechanisms to ensure the Strategy is implemented and kept current.
