National Preventative Health Strategy
The Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Nicola Roxon, launched the National Preventative Health Strategy on 1 September 2009. The Strategy provides a blueprint for tackling the burden of chronic disease currently caused by obesity, tobacco, and excessive consumption of alcohol. It is directed at primary prevention and addresses all relevant arms of policy and all available points of leverage, in both the health and non-health sectors.

World Health Organization
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified physical inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Increasing levels of physical inactivity are seen worldwide, in high-income countries as well as low- and middle-income countries. The WHO provides recommendations for the optimal amounts of activity, but doing some physical activity is better than doing none. All sectors and all levels within governments, international partners, civil society, non-governmental organizations and the private sector have vital roles to play in shaping healthy environments and contributing to the promotion of physical activity.
