Local Government

Local governments play a crucial role in increasing physical activity by creating environments and opportunities for activity and active living, as well as delivering initiatives to meet local community needs.
The following section of the website provides information for local governments about the work of the Taskforce, why and how to prioritise physical activity and key resources and information to help with the implementation of initiatives.
The Taskforce and Local Government
The Physical Activity Taskforce worked closely with local governments to support them in improving physical activity opportunities at a local level.
Why Prioritise Physical Activity?
Physical activity is not just about ‘health’ or ‘sport and recreation’. Prioritising physical activity has multiple benefits overall health, social, economic and environmental benefits for the community.
How to Support Physical Activity
There are many opportunities for local governments to support physical activity through policy and planning, the built environment; programs and services; community infrastructure and partnerships.
Resources & Information Sharing
With 40% of the Western Australian adult population not getting enough physical activity for their health, the work being done by Local, State, National and non-Government agencies to develop local opportunities to be healthy and physically active needs to be widely promoted.
