There are many health, social, economic and environmental benefits to be gained when members of the community are more active.
Health benefits, such as reducing the risk of chronic disease and helping tackle the overweight and obesity epidemic are widely known - but also air pollution and traffic congestion are reduced when people replace car trips with walking or cycling.
Physical activity can also contribute to people having a better sense of community and help increase personal safety as there are more people ‘out and about’.
The cost of physical inactivity in Western Australia is estimated at $1.5 billion per year but this is expected to increase exponentially over the next ten years given the ageing population and upward trend in obesity and chronic disease.
The obesity problem, of which physical inactivity is a key factor, has already cost Western Australia $2.1 billion.
