About us

The Physical Activity Taskforce was formed in 2001 to address physical inactivity in Western Australia.

It followed West Australian research that reflected international trends toward long-term declining physical activity levels.

Low physical activity levels has a huge impact on health with physical activity being the second only to tobacco control as the most important factor in disease prevention.

Increased walking and cycling for transport and decreased car trips also has a positive environmental impact and improves air quality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.

To increase physical activity levels in Western Australia an across government and across community approach is needed.

The Taskforce has brought together the expertise of a number of Government Departments and relevant agencies in a combined effort to address the declining level of physical activity in Western Australia.

The Taskforce links government and community agencies under the umbrella brand be active wa which was developed by the Taskforce.

be active wa is representative of the whole-of-government, whole-of-community effort to address physical activity in Western Australia. It is designed to show a link between the range of programs and initiatives conducted by State and Local Governments and community agencies to promote physical activity.

Guidance on how the be active wa brand can be used is available in the be active wa Styleguide.
